Abstract
The surgical reamer (20) has a hollow dome (24) with apertures (26) spaced apart arranged in arcs (28) extending from an apex (30) of the dome to the base portion (32) of the dome, and removable teeth (22) positioned in the apertures. Each cutting tooth (22) has a flange (52) that is aligned flush with the external surface of the dome (24), and a raised cutting edge (50) extending above the flange and the external surface (36) of the dome, and an interior passageway (39) communicating between the outside and inside of the dome. In one embodiment, a base plate (56) is removably secured on the base portion (32) of the dome (24) to provide closure of the central cavity (34) of the dome.
Claims14
A rotary reamer assembly comprising:
- a hollow reamer body having a wall with an external surface and a base, the wall defining a central cavity and a plurality of passageways through the wall defining cutting sites, the passageways communicating between the external surface of the wall and the central cavity for passage of removed bone and tissue through the wall into the central cavity;
- a shaft provided for transmitting torque for rotation of the reamer body;
- and
- a retaining member extending diametrically across the base including a central embossed portion, for retaining the shaft and the reamer body in a fixed relative position.
A rotary surgical reamer assembly comprising:
- a hollow reamer body having a wall with an external surface and a base having a periphery, the wall defining a central cavity and a plurality of passageways through the wall defining cutting sites, the passageways communicating between the external surface of the wall and the central cavity for passage of removed bone and tissue through the wall into the central cavity;
- a shaft provided for transmitting torque for rotation of the reamer body;
- and
- a retaining member including a rounded central portion having a flat embossment, the retaining member extending diametrically across the base and affixed to the periphery for retaining the shaft and the reamer body together.
A rotary surgical reamer assembly comprising:
- a hollow reamer body having a wall with an external surface and a base having a periphery, the wall defining a central cavity and a plurality of passageways through the wall defining cutting sites, the passageways communicating between the external surface of the wall and the central cavity for passage of removed bone and tissue through the wall into the central cavity;
- a shaft provided for transmitting torque for rotation of the reamer body;
- and
- a considerably flat retaining member including a rounded central embossment having terminal ends extending into the base, the retaining member extending diametrically across the base for retaining the shaft and the reamer body in a fixed relative position.
