Abstract
The present invention provides methods for increasing the quality of cotton fiber produced from a cotton plant by transformation with a DNA encoding sucrose phosphate synthase. In particular the fiber qualities include strength, length, fiber fineness, fiber maturity ratio, immature fiber content, fiber uniformity, and micronaire.
Claims16
A transgenic cotton plant comprising a chimeric DNA construct comprising a plant specific promoter and a DNA encoding a sucrose phosphate synthase, whereby the transgenic cotton plant has an increased level of sucrose phosphate synthase relative to a non-transgenic cotton plant and wherein cotton fibers from the plant have improved quality, said improved quality being selected from the group consisting of increased strength, increased length, increased fiber fineness, increased fiber maturity ratio, decreased immature fiber content, increased fiber uniformity, and increased micronaire, compared to a cotton plant lacking the chimeric DNA construct.
A method of improving the quality of cotton fiber produced from a cotton plant, said method comprising:
- introducing into a cotton plant a chimeric DNA construct comprising a plant specific transcription initiation region and a DNA encoding a sucrose phosphate synthase which, when introduced into cells of said cotton plant increases sucrose phosphate synthase activity in an amount sufficient to improve the quality of the cotton fiber produced by the cotton plant, wherein the improved quality is selected from the group consisting of increased strength, increased length, increased fiber fineness, increased fiber maturity ratio, decreased immature fiber content, increased fiber uniformity, and increased micronaire, compared to a cotton plant lacking the chimeric DNA construct.
A method of altering the quality of fiber isolated from a cotton plant by altering the expression of sucrose phosphate synthase in the plant, said method comprising:
- introducing into a cotton plant a chimeric DNA construct comprising a DNA encoding a sucrose phosphate synthase which, when introduced into cells of said plant, increases sucrose phosphate synthase activity in an amount sufficient to alter the quality of fiber produced from the plant, wherein the altered fiber quality is selected from the group consisting of strength, length, fineness, maturity ratio, immature fiber content, uniformity, and micronaire, compared to a cotton plant lacking the chimeric DNA construct.
A method of altering the quality of fiber isolated from a cotton plant by decreasing the expression of sucrose phosphate synthase in the plant, said method comprising:
- introducing into a cotton plant a chimeric DNA construct comprising an antisense DNA encoding a nucleic acid molecule complementary to a sense DNA encoding sucrose phosphate synthase which, when introduced into cells of said plant, decreases sucrose phosphate synthase activity in an amount sufficient to alter the quality of fiber produced from the plant, wherein the altered fiber quality is selected from the group consisting of decreased strength, decreased length, and decreased weight per unit length, as compared to a cotton plant lacking the chimeric DNA construct.
