Abstract
An amorphous metal alloy strip is disclosed having a width greater than about one inch and a thickness less than about 0.003 inch, this alloy consists essentially of 77 to 80 atomic percent iron, 12 to 16 atomic percent boron and 5 to 10 atomic percent silicon with incidental impurities. The strip has a 60 cycle per second core loss of less than about 0.100 watts per pound at 12.6 kilogauss, saturation magnetization of at least 15 kilogauss, and a coercive force of less than about 0.04 oersteds. Such alloy is further characterized by increased castability and the strip produced therefrom exhibits at least singular ductility. A method of producing such optimum strip is also disclosed.
Claims18
A metal alloy strip, the alloy of the strip consisting essentially of a composition having the formula FeaBbSic where “a”, “b”, and “c” are atomic percentages ranging from about 79 to less than 80, greater then 10 up to 16, and 5 to 10, respectively, with the sum of “a”, “b”, and “c” being equal to 100, and “b” being greater than “c”, the alloy strip having a core loss of less than about 0.22 Wkg (0.10 W/lb) as measured at 60 Hz and an induction value within 1.0-1.5 Tesla, and the alloy having effective amounts of boron and silicon such that the strip is at least singularly ductile and is at least 75% amorphous.
A metal alloy strip which is at least 75% amorphous, the alloy consisting essentially of a composition having the formula FeaBbSic wherein “a”, “b”, and “c” are atomic percentages ranging from about 79 to less than 80, greater than 10 up to 16, and 5 to 10, respectively, with the sum of “a”, “b”, and “c” being equal to 100, the alloy strip having a core loss of less than about 0.22 W/kg (0.10 W/lb) as measured at 60 Hz and an induction value within 1.0-1.5 Tesla, and a saturation magnetization of at least 15 kilogauss, and being at least singularly ductile.
A metal alloy strip, the alloy consisting essentially of a composition having the formula FeaBbSic wherein “a”, “b”, and “c” are atomic percentages ranging from about 79 to less than 80, greater than 10 up to 16, and 5 to 10, respectively, with the sum of “a”, “b”, and “c” being equal to 100, and “b” being greater than “C”, the alloy strip having a core loss of less than about 0.22 W/kg (0.10 W/lb) as measured at 60 Hz and an induction value of 1.26 Tesla, and a saturation magnetization of at least 15 kilogauss, the alloy having effective amounts of boron and silicon for melting within 150° F. (83° C.) of the eutectic temperature and such that the strip is at least singularly ductile and is at least 75% amorphous.
