Abstract
A plural-layer body-contacting cushioning interface structure which is interposable the human body and an external structure, such as a helmet. The cushioning structure of the invention, in one preferred form, has a body-facing side which contacts the body, and a load-facing side which contacts the mentioned external structure. Intermediate these sides is a moisture-wicking layer which is designed to contact, and draw moisture away from, the body, a continuous, moisture-blocking, gas-permeable barrier layer adjacent the moisture-wicking layer, and an acceleration-rate-sensitive cushioning structure disposed protectedly within the barrier layer which fully encapsulates the cushioning structure.
Claims9
Human-body-contacting, cushioning interface structure comprising
- a body-facing side,
- a spaced load-facing side, and
- intermediate said two sides, a layered assembly including (a) acceleration-rate-sensitive, cushioning core structure having a characteristic that causes it, under the influence of an elevated, localized, non-atmospheric pressure applied to and on the interface structure's body-facing side, to flow in a manner which tends to change and such pressure, and (b) a fully-jacketing, moisture-proof, non-perforated but gas-permeable barrier layer completely encapsulating said core structure to block completely any flow of moisture from the outside through the barrier layer into the core structure.
Human-body-contacting, cushioning interface structure comprising
- at least one generally temperature-and-pressure-sensitive, flowable, retreat-responsive, acceleration-rate-sensitive, cushioning structure having a load-facing expanse and a body-facing expanse, adapted to be interposed, under circumstances with the interface structure disposed in an operative condition relative to a person's body, functionally intermediate the body and an external structure, and being constructed to perform, when in such a disposition, and with respect to any relative motion that occurs between the body and the mentioned external structure which tends to reduce the distance between the two, with a character that is likenable to acceleration-resistant, shear-resistant, rate-sensitive fluid dilatancy,
- at least one fully moisture-proof, non-perforated but gas-permeable barrier layer operatively joined in an encapsulating manner to said cushioning structure to block completely any flow of moisture from the outside through the barrier layer into the cushioning structure, and
- a moisture-wicking layer positioned on the opposite side of said barrier layer relative to said cushioning structure.
