Abstract
A method of cleaning or protecting surfaces by treatment with compositions comprising N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone (OdDHL) blocking compounds and/or N-butyryl-L-homoserine lactone (BHL) analogs, either in combination or separately.
Claims32
A biofilm removing or inhibiting composition comprising an amount of a mixture of analogs of butyryl L-homo-serine lactone (BHL) and blockers of N-(3-oxododecanoly) L-homoserine lactone (OdDHL), and a vehicle or carrier, wherein the amount of the mixture is effective to remove or disrupt a bacterial biofilm or inhibit normal biofilm formation.
A biofilm removing or inhibiting composition comprising an amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of blockers of N-(3-oxododecanoly) L-homoserine lactone (OdDHL), and mixtures of blockers of OdDHL and analogs of butyryl L-homo-serine lactone (BHL), and a vehicle or carrier, wherein the amount of the compound is effective to remove or disrupt a bacterial biofilm or inhibit normal biofilm formation wherein the OdDHL blocker has the following structure:
- wherein
- R1-R21 are selected from the group consisting of H, C1-C4 alkyl group, OH, NH2, SH and a halogen, wherein the halogen is selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine;
- R22 and R23 are selected from a halogen, H, S, N, NH, and O
- R24-R28 is H or a halogen, and
- X1 and X2 are selected from O, S, H2 or any combination of H plus one halogen or two halogens when one or more R groups is substituted, and at least one of R1-R21 is a halogen, or the alkylene chain of the molecule contains a sulfur in the chain.
A biofilm removing or inhibiting composition comprising an amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of analogs of butyryl L-homo-serine lactone (BHL), and mixtures of analogs of BHL and blockers of N-(3-oxododecanoly) L-homoserine lactone (OdDHL), and a vehicle or carrier, wherein the amount of the compound is effective to remove or disrupt a bacterial biofilm or inhibit normal biofilm formation wherein the analog of BHL has the following structure:
- wherein
- R1-R7 are selected from the group consisting of H, C1-C4 alkyl group, OH, NH2, SH and a halogen, wherein the halogen is selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine;
- R22 and R23 are selected from H, S, N, NH, and O
- R24-R28 is H or a halogen, and
- X is selected from O, S, H2 or any combination of H plus one halogen H plus OH or NH2, a double bonded O, NH, S, or two halogens when one or more R groups is substituted, and at least one of R1-R7 is a halogen, or the alkylene chain of the molecule contains a sulfur in the chain.
A biofilm removing or inhibiting composition comprising an amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of blockers of N-(3-oxododecanoly) L-homoserine lactone (OdDHL) and analogs of butyryl L-homo-serine lactone (BHL), and mixtures thereof, and a vehicle or carrier, wherein the amount of the compound is effective to remove or disrupt a bacterial biofilm or inhibit normal biofilm formation, additionally comprising a surfactant selected from group consisting of anionic, nonionic, amphoteric, biological surfactants and mixtures thereof.
A biofilm removing or inhibiting composition comprising an amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of blockers of N-(3-oxododecanoly) L-homoserine lactone (OdDHL), analogs of butyryl L-homo-serine lactone (BHL), and mixtures thereof, and a vehicle or carrier, wherein the amount of the compound is effective to remove or disrupt a bacterial biofilm or inhibit normal biofilm formation, wherein the OdDHL blocker has the structure of formula I and the BHL analog has the structure of formula II:
- wherein
- R1-R21 are selected from the group consisting of H, C1-C4 alkyl group, OH, NH2, SH and a halogen, wherein the halogen is selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine;
- R22 and R23 are selected from a halogen, H, S, N, NH, and O
- R24-R28 is H or a halogen, and
- X, X1 and X2 are selected from O, S, H2 or any combination of H plus one halogen or two halogens when one or more R groups is substituted,
- provided that when the biofilm comprises an OdDHL blocker alone or a BHL analog alone, at least one of R1-R21 is a halogen, or the alkylene chain of the molecule contains a sulfur in the chain.
