Abstract
A novel process for paving or sealing the interior surface of a tissue lumen by entering the interior of the tissue lumen and applying a polymer to the interior surface of the tissue lumen. This is accomplished using a catheter which delivers the polymer to the tissue lumen and causes it to conform to the interior surface of lumen. The polymer can be delivered to the lumen as a monomer or prepolymer solution, or as an at least partially preformed layer on an expansible member.
Claims52
A process comprising:
- introducing into a lumen within an diseased organ a fluent polymeric article containing living cells;
- converting the fluent polymeric article into a non-fluent state, and
- allowing the article to remain in the lumen for a therapeutically effective period of time.
A method of forming a layer of polymeric material on a tissue surface internally of a mammal, comprising:
- applying to a tissue surface internally of a mammal an initially entirely fluent, pre-polymeric material that is activatable to a non-fluent, polymeric condition, the pre-polymeric material comprising at least one living cell;
- and
- polymerizing the pre-polymeric material on the tissue surface to form thereon a layer of polymeric, non-fluent material.
A method comprising:
- applying to a tissue surface internally of a mammal an initially entirely fluent, pre-polymeric material that is activatable to a non-fluent, polymeric condition by exposure to actinic light, the pre-polymeric material comprising at least one living cell;
- and
- thereafter applying to the material actinic light for a sufficient length of time to effect in situ conversion of the material from a pre-polymeric, fluent to a polymeric, non-fluent condition.
A method for applying to a surface of mammalian tissue a polymeric, non-fluent material comprising:
- via minimally-invasive surgery, applying internally of a mammal an initially entirely fluent, pre-polymeric material to the tissue, the material being activatable to a non-fluent, polymeric condition by exposure to actinic light and comprising at least one living cell;
- and
- thereafter applying to the material actinic light for a sufficient length of time to effect in situ conversion of the material from a pre-polymeric, fluent to a polymeric, non-fluent condition.
A kit for paving or sealing an interior surface of a hallow organ or a tissue lumen,
- a device constructed to be inserted into the interior of the hollow organ or tissue lumen;
- a polymer material for introduction into the hollow organ or tissue lumen, the polymer material comprising at least one living cell, and;
- an element associated with the device, constructed and arranged to reconfigure the polymer material to form a layer of polymer material on the interior surface whereby the polymer material is in intimate and conforming contact with the tissue surface.
A kit for paving or sealing an interior surface of a hollow organ or a tissue lumen, the kit comprising:
- a catheter for entering the interior of the hollow organ or tissue lumen, the catheter having a distal end insertable into the hollow organ or tissue lumen and a proximal end adapted to remain outside of the hollow organ or tissue lumen;
- a polymer material for introduction into the hollow organ or tissue lumen, the polymer material comprising at least one living cell, and;
- an expansile member disposed at the distal end of the catheter for reconfiguring the polymer material to form a layer of the polymer material on the interior surface whereby the polymer material is in intimate and conforming contact with the tissue surface.
