Abstract
A high temperature superconductor (HTSC) 5 is magnetized between drive coils 1,2 forming poles of a magnet connected by an iron yoke 9 by relative movement of a vacuum insulated cryostat 4 containing the HTSC and the magnetizing magnet, in order to magnetize a large area of HTSC using a magnet with a small region 3 of magnetizing flux. Alternatively, the HTSC 5may be contained in an evacuated region of a cryostat containing the magnetizing magnet. An interconnecting chamber allows the HTSC to be moved between an operative region and a magnetizing region without substantial loss of vacuum.
Claims20
A cryogenic magnetizing apparatus for use with a high temperature superconductor contained in a first evacuated region of a first cryostat, the apparatus comprising:
- a second cryostat having a second evacuated region for receiving the high temperature superconductor for magnetization;
- magnetic field generating windings for generating a magnetizing magnetic field in the second evacuated region;
- and
- means for interconnecting the first and second cryostats such that the high temperature superconductor may be transferred between the first and second evacuated regions without substantial loss of vacuum.
A cryogenic magnetizing apparatus for magnetizing a high temperature superconductor the apparatus comprising:
- a first cryostat;
- a first evacuated chamber disposed within the first cryostat;
- a second cryostat;
- a second evacuated chamber disposed within the second cryostat;
- a third evacuated chamber disposed between the first and second evacuated chambers for interconnecting said first and second evacuated chambers such that the high temperature superconductor can be transferred between the first and second evacuated chambers without substantial loss of vacuum;
- and
- a magnet disposed within the second evacuated chamber for generating a magnetic field in the second evacuated region for magnetizing the high temperature superconductor.
A method of magnetizing a high temperature superconductor comprising the steps of:
- connecting a first evacuated chamber containing the high temperature superconductor to an interconnection chamber;
- evacuating the interconnection chamber;
- transferring the high temperature superconductor from the first evacuated chamber to a second evacuated chamber such that the transfer is made without substantial loss of vacuum in the first and second evacuated chambers;
- cooling the high temperature superconductor to a temperature below its critical temperature;
- and
- generating a magnetic field in the second evacuated chamber for magnetizing the high temperature superconductor.
