Abstract
The present invention concerns a method of enhancing milk production by a ruminant that includes providing a feed that contains sorbitol and at least one additional feed component, and orally feeding the feed to the ruminant, the ruminant ingesting about 100 grams, or less, of sorbitol per day.
Claims15
A method of enhancing milk production by a ruminant, the method comprising:
- providing a feed that comprises sugar alcohol and at least one additional feed component, the feed free of sugar alcohols other than sorbitol, the feed having a composition that is effective to cause at least about 50 weight percent of the sorbitol, based upon the total weight of the sorbitol in the feed, to exit the rumen of the ruminant within about 6 to about 8 hours after the sorbitol enters the rumen;
- and
- orally feeding the feed to the ruminant, the ruminant ingesting about 100 grams, or less, of sorbitol per day.
A method of enhancing milk production by a ruminant, the method comprising:
- providing a feed that comprises a sugar alcohol and at least one additional feed component, the sugar alcohol having a first molecular structure, the feed free of any sugar alcohol having a molecular structure different from the first molecular structure;
- and
- orally feeding the feed to the ruminant, the feed having a composition that is effective to cause at least about 50 weight percent of the sugar alcohol, based upon the total weight of the sugar alcohol in the feed, to exit the rumen of the ruminant within about 6 to about 8 hours after the sugar alcohol enters the rumen.
A method of enhancing milk production by a ruminant, the method comprising:
- combining a sugar alcohol and at least one additional component to form a feed, the sugar alcohol having a first molecular structure and the feed free of any sugar alcohol having a molecular structure different from the first molecular structure;
- and
- orally supplying the feed to the ruminant at a rate that is effective to provide the ruminant with about 50 grams of the sugar alcohol per day.
A method of enhancing milk production by a ruminant, the method comprising:
- combining a sugar alcohol and at least one additional component to form a feed, the sugar alcohol having a first molecular structure and the feed free of any sugar alcohol having a molecular structure different from the first molecular structure, wherein the sugar alcohol is adonitol, allitol, altritol, arabinitol, dulcitol, erythritol, galaxitol, glucitol, glycerol, iditol, inositol, isomalt, lactitol, maltitol, mannitol, perseitol, ribitol, rhamnitol, threitol, or xylitol;
- and
- orally supplying the feed to the ruminant at a rate that is effective to provide the ruminant with about 100 grams, or less, of the sugar alcohol per day.
