An apparatus and a method for winding a web of tapes or yarns to a plurality of packages, wherein a plurality of winding positions are arranged side by side on a long side of the apparatus, with at least one package being wound in each winding position. To distribute the tapes or yarns of the web, a yarn guide bar and a plurality of yarn guides are provided, the yarn guides being associated with respective ones of the winding positions. In this process, the web of tapes or yarns is guided above the winding positions in a distribution plane that extends transverse to the long side of the apparatus. The yarn guide bar is movable so as to permit unimpeded access to the winding positions in a doffing plane which is parallel to the long side of the apparatus, to facilitate doffing of the full packages with the aid of an auxiliary device which can be guided in the doffing plane.
