Compositions containing aqueous viscosifying surfactants and methods for applying such compositions in subterranean formations

A method of reducing the production of water from a subterranean formation subsequent to fracturing the formation, comprising:

• (a) providing an aqueous-based hydraulic fracturing fluid comprising
• (i) an aqueous medium,
• (ii) an amount of a water-soluble salt capable of effecting formation stability, and
• (iii) an amount of a thickener at least capable of producing a desired viscosity, the thickener being capable of forming viscosifying micelles,
• (b) generating a viscous fluid comprising viscosifying micelles by blending the aqueous-based hydraulic fracturing fluid;
• and
• (c) pumping the viscous fluid through a wellbore and into a formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation comprising an aqueous zone and a hydrocarbon zone, whereby the viscosifying micelles disband within the hydrocarbon zone to reduce the viscosity of the fluid, thereby facilitating the removal of the fluid from the hydrocarbon zone of the formation and reducing the amount of water produced from the formation during the removal step.

A method of fracturing a subterranean formation comprising:

• (a) providing an aqueous-based hydraulic fracturing fluid comprising
• (1) an aqueous medium,
• (2) an amount of an inorganic water-soluble salt capable of effecting formation stability, and
• (3) an amount of a thickener at least capable of producing a desired viscosity in the fluid, the thickener comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of an anionic, a cationic, a nonionic, and a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactant, the cationic viscosifying surfactants being used in combination with one selected from the group consisting of an anionic, a nonionic and a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactants;
• (b) generating a viscous fluid comprising viscosifying micelles by blending the aqueous-based hydraulic fracturing fluid;
• (c) pumping the viscous fluid through a wellbore and into a formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation comprising an aqueous zone and a hydrocarbon zone, whereby the viscosifying micelles disband in the hydrocarbon zone to reduce the viscosity of the fluid, thereby facilitating the removal of the viscous fluid from the hydrocarbon zone and reducing the amount of water produced from the subterranean formation during the removal step;
• and
• (d) producing hydrocarbons from the subterranean formation.

A method of reducing the amount of water produced from a subterranean formation following fracturing of the subterranean formation, the method comprising:

• (a) providing an aqueous-based hydraulic fracturing fluid comprising
• (1) an aqueous medium,
• (2) an amount of a water-soluble salt capable of effecting formation stability, the salt being selected from the group of salts comprising ammonium chlorides, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, Mg-containing salts, Zn-containing salts, and calcium salts, and
• (3) an amount of a thickener at least capable of producing a desired viscosity in the fluid, the thickener comprising at least one viscosifying surfactant selected from the group consisting of an anionic, a cationic, a nonionic, and a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactant, the anionic surfactant comprising a functional group selected from the group consisting of carbonate, carboxylate, carbamate, phosphate, sulfate, and sulfonate group, the cationic viscosifying surfactants being used in combination with at least one selected from an anionic, a nonionic and a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactants and when the nonionic viscosifying surfactants and the anionic viscosifying surfactants which have carboxylate groups are used with a water-soluble salt containing magnesium, calcium or zinc, a chelating agent effective for chelating multivalent inorganic cations is also added;
• (b) generating a viscous fluid comprising viscosifying micelles by blending the aqueous-based hydraulic fracturing fluid;
• (c) pumping the viscous fluid through a wellbore and into the formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation having at least one aqueous zone and at least one hydrocarbon zone;
• and
• (d) producing at least one selected from the group consisting of oil and gas from the subterranean formation.

A method of fracturing a formation penetrated by a wellbore using a foamed viscosifying surfactant fluid, comprising:

• (a) providing a viscosifying surfactant fluid comprising
• (i) a thickening amount of a surfactant capable of forming viscosifying micelles, and
• (ii) an aqueous medium;
• (b) generating a foamed viscosifying surfactant fluid containing viscosifying micelles by blending the viscosifying surfactant fluid, the viscosifying micelles having a micellar structure of hydrophilic and hydrophobic portions;
• and
• (c) pumping the foamed viscosifying surfactant fluid through a wellbore and into a formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation having a hydrocarbon-bearing zone and an aqueous zone, whereby the viscosity of the foamed viscosifying surfactant fluid is reduced within the hydrocarbon-bearing zone, but not within the aqueous zone, thereby reducing the production of water from the formation.

A method of fracturing a subterranean formation, the method comprising:

• (a) providing an aqueous-based hydraulic fracturing fluid comprising:
• (1) an aqueous medium,
• (2) an effective amount of a water soluble salt, and
• (3) an amount of a thickener at least capable of producing a desired viscosity in the fluid, the thickener comprising at least one viscosifying surfactant selected from the group consisting of an anionic, a cationic, a nonionic, and a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactants the cationic viscosifying surfactants being used in combination with at least one selected from the group consisting of an anionic, a nonionic and a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactants;
• (b) generating a viscous fluid comprising micelles by blending the aqueous-based hydraulic fracturing fluid;
• (c) foaming the viscous fluid to produce a foamed viscous fluid;
• (d) pumping the foamed viscous fluid through a wellbore and into the formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation having at least one aqueous zone and at least one hydrocarbon zone;
• and
• (e) producing hydrocarbon from the subterranean formation.

A method of fracturing a formation penetrated by a well using a viscous fluid, comprising:

• (a) providing a surfactant-based fluid comprising
• (i) an aqueous liquid, and
• (ii) at least one surfactant, the at least one surfactant being capable of forming viscosifying micelles, being present in an amount at least capable of producing a desired viscosity, and being selected from the group consisting of an anionic, a cationic, a nonionic, and a zwitterionic surfactants the cationic viscosifying surfactants being used in combination with at least one selected from the group consisting of an anionic, a nonionic and a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactants;
• and
• (b) generating a viscous fluid containing viscosifying micelles by blending the surfactant-based fluid;
• and
• (c) pumping the viscous fluid through a wellbore and into a formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation having a hydrocarbon-bearing zone and an aqueous zone, whereby the viscosity of the viscous fluid is reduced within the hydrocarbon-bearing zone, but the integrity of viscosifying micelle structures within the aqueous zone are maintained, thereby reducing the production of water from the formation upon placing the well back on production.

A method of altering the viscosity of an aqueous fracturing fluid to reduce the production of connate water subsequent to fracturing a well, the method comprising:

• (a) blending an aqueous fracturing fluid with a surfactant capable of forming viscosifying micelles to form a viscous fracturing fluid;
• (b) pumping the viscous fracturing fluid into the well;
• and
• (c) decreasing the viscosity of the viscous fracturing fluid by contacting the viscous fracturing fluid with hydrocarbons.

A method of limiting the inflow of formation water during and after a well turn around to maximize recovery of fracturing fluid and components thereof after a hydraulic fracturing treatment of a formation having a hydrocarbon zone and a water-bearing zone, the method comprising:

• (a) selectively blocking the pore structure in the water-bearing zone at the formation face and not blocking the pore structure of the hydrocarbon zone at the formation face with a viscous fluid comprising
• (1) a viscosifying surfactant capable of forming a viscosifying micelle in an aqueous environment,
• (2) a water-soluble salt to effect formation stability, and
• (3) an aqueous medium;
• (b) performing a hydraulic fracturing treatment using a fracturing fluid capable of transporting a proppant into a fracture;
• and
• (c) turning the well around to recover the fracturing fluid and components thereof.

A method of reducing the production of water from a subterranean formation subsequent to fracturing the formation, comprising:

• (a) providing a wellbore service fluid comprising at least one surfactant and at least one water-soluble salt in an aqueous medium, wherein the at least one surfactant being capable of forming micelles and being present in an amount at least capable of producing a desired viscosity, the at least one water-soluble salt being capable of effecting formation stability;
• (b) pumping the wellbore service fluid through a wellbore and into a formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation having an aqueous zone and a hydrocarbon zone, whereby the viscosity of the wellbore service fluid within the hydrocarbon zone is reduced to form a thinned fluid as a result of contacting the hydrocarbons therein;
• and
• (c) removing the thinned fluid from the hydrocarbon zone, whereby the amount of water produced from the formation during the removing step is reduced as a result of the wellbore service fluid creating a barrier to water flow into the wellbore from a water-bearing zone.

A method of fracturing a subterranean formation comprising:

• (a) providing a wellbore service fluid comprising at least one surfactant and at least one water-soluble salt in an aqueous medium, wherein the at least one surfactant being capable of forming micelles and being present in an amount at least capable of producing a desired viscosity, and the at least one water-soluble salt being capable of effecting formation stability;
• (b) pumping the wellbore service fluid through a wellbore and into a formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation having an aqueous zone and a hydrocarbon zone, the aqueous zone comprising water, whereby the viscosity of the wellbore service fluid within the hydrocarbon zone is reduced as a result of contacting the hydrocarbons therein;
• (c) removing the wellbore service fluid;
• and
• (d) producing hydrocarbons from the subterranean formation.

A method of reducing the amount of water produced from a subterranean formation following fracturing of the subterranean formation, the method comprising:

• (a) providing a wellbore service fluid comprising at least one surfactant and at least one water-soluble salt in an aqueous medium, wherein the at least one water-soluble salt being capable of effecting formation stability and being selected from the group consisting of ammonium chlorides, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, Mg-containing salts, Zn-containing salts, and calcium salts, and the at least one viscosifying surfactant being capable of forming micelles, being present in an amount at least capable of producing a desired viscosity, and being selected from the group consisting of an anionic, a cationic, a nonionic, and a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactant, the anionic surfactant comprising a functional group selected from the group consisting of carbonate, carboxylate, carbamate, phosphate, sulfate, and sulfonate group, the cationic viscosifying surfactants being used in combination with an anionic, nonionic and/or zwitterionic viscosifying surfactant and when the nonionic viscosifying surfactants and the anionic viscosifying surfactants which have carboxylate groups are used with a water-soluble salt containing magnesium, calcium or zinc, a chelating agent effective for chelating multivalent inorganic cations is also added;
• (b) pumping the wellbore service fluid through a wellbore and into the formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation having at least one aqueous zone and at least one hydrocarbon zone;
• and
• (d) producing at least one selected from oil and gas from the subterranean formation.

A method of fracturing a formation penetrated by a wellbore using a foamed fluid, comprising:

• (a) providing a wellbore service fluid comprising at least one surfactant and at least one water-soluble salt in an aqueous medium, the at least one surfactant being capable of forming micelles and being present in an amount at least capable of producing a desired viscosity, the at least one water-soluble salt being capable of effecting formation stability;
• (b) generating a foamed fluid using the wellbore service fluid;
• and
• (c) pumping the foamed fluid through a wellbore and into a formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation having a hydrocarbon-bearing zone and an aqueous zone, whereby the viscosity of the foamed fluid is reduced within the hydrocarbon-bearing zone, but not within the aqueous zone, thereby selectively blocking the pore structure in the aqueous zone at the formation face and reducing the production of water from the formation.

A method of foamed fracturing a subterranean formation, the method comprising:

• (a) providing a wellbore service fluid comprising at least one surfactant and at least one water-soluble salt in an aqueous medium, the at least one water-soluble salt being capable of effecting formation stability, the at least one viscosifying surfactant being capable of forming micelles, being present in an amount at least capable of producing a desired viscosity, and being selected from the group consisting of an anionic, a cationic, a nonionic, a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactants the cationic viscosifying surfactants being used in combination with at least one selected from an anionic, a nonionic and a zwitterionic viscosifying surfactants;
• (b) foaming the wellbore service fluid to produce a foamed fluid;
• (c) pumping the foamed fluid through a wellbore and into the formation at a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation, the formation having at least one aqueous zone comprising water and at least one hydrocarbon zone;
• (d) fracturing the subterranean formation;
• and
• (e) producing hydrocarbon from the subterranean formation.
