Abstract
Described are organic photochromic imbibition compositions that incorporate kinetic enhancing additive(s). Kinetic enhancing additives include epoxy-containing compounds, organic polyols and/or plasticizers that improve the performance of organic photochromic compounds as determined in the Photochromic Performance Test. Also described is a process for incorporating kinetic enhancing additives into polymeric substrates with organic photochromic compounds and the resulting photochromic articles produced by such a process.

A removable imbibition composition comprising photochromic compound(s) selected from the group consisting of naphthopyrans, quinopyrans, indenonaphthopyrans, phenanthropyrans, benzopyrans, metal dithiozonates, fulgides, fulgimides, and a mixture thereof, and from 0.1 to 99.9 weight percent, based on the total weight of the composition, of kinetic enhancing additive(s) comprising epoxy-containing compound(s), wherein upon the application of the composition to the surface of an organic polymeric article, the photochromic compound(s) and kinetic enhancing additive(s) are transferred into the polymeric article and the residual resin film formed from the composition is removed from the polymeric article.
