Abstract
Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant, over 500 times more powerful than Vitamin E and 10 times stronger than other carotenoids such as zeaxanthin, lutein, canthaxanthin and beta-carotene. Astaxanthin has also been shown to enhance and modulate the immune system. Disclosed is a method and treatment for retarding and preventing sunburns. The method comprises administering a source of astaxanthin in a therapeutically effective amount to prevent and retard sunburns.

A method to retard and prevent sunburns of the skin, comprising orally administering, to a patient in need thereof, a therapeutically effective dose of a formulation comprising astaxanthin as the single active ingredient.
A method to retard and prevent sunburns of the skin, comprising administering, to a patient in need thereof, a therapeutically effective dose of a formulation comprising astaxanthin as the single active ingredient, by injection.
A method to retard and prevent sunburns of the skin, comprising administering, to a patient in need thereof, a therapeutically effective dose of a formulation comprising astaxanthin as the single active ingredient, topically.
A treatment to retard and prevent sunburns of the skin, comprising about 1 to 100 mg of astaxanthin per day, in a formulation comprising astaxanthin as the single active ingredient, administered to a patient in need thereof, orally, topically, or by injection.
