Abstract
A ceramic material which is an orthorhombic boride of the general formula: AlMgB14:X, with X being a doping agent. The ceramic is a superabrasive, and in most instances provides a hardness of 40 GPa or greater.
Claims5
A process of preparing a ceramic material, comprising:
- milling approximately stoichiometric amounts of boron, magnesium and aluminum until substantially uniform, and thereafter
- mixing the milled materials with 5 weight % to 30% weight % of a doping agent selected from the group consisting of Group III, IV, or V elements or borides and nitrides derived therefrom, and thereafter
- hot pressing the milled mixture at a temperature of from 1300° C. to 1500° C. for a time sufficient to form said ceramic.
