Abstract
A novel pectate lyase belonging to a novel family of polysaccharide lyases has good performance in industrial processes under neutral or alkaline conditions such as laundering and textile processing. The pectate lyase may be derivable from Bacillus species.

An isolated polypeptide
- (a) having an amino acid sequence that is at least 70% identical to the sequence of amino acid residues 30-344 of SEQ ID NO:

- or
- (b) encoded by a DNA sequence that hybridizes with the sequence of nucleotides 88-1033 of SEQ ID NO:1 under medium stringency conditions;
- wherein the polypeptide has pectate lyase activity.
