Abstract
Magnesium oxychloride and magnesium oxysulfate materials and methods of making the same are disclosed. The materials are cured reaction products of a magnesium oxide, and an aqueous magnesium salt solution. The aqueous salt solution preferably has a specific gravity of about 1.18 to about 1.4. The magnesium oxide has a platelet or flake structure, a bulk density of about 30 lbs/ft3 (about 0.48 g/cm3) to about 70 lbs/ft3 (about 1.12 g/cm3), and a particle density of about 215 lbs/ft3 (about 3.45 g/cm3) or less. The platelet/flake magnesium oxide is prepared, preferably from particles of magnesium oxide ore or brucite ore, using brine-free methods.

A ceramic material comprising a cured reaction product of:
- (a) magnesium oxide having a platelet or flake structure, a bulk density of about 30 lbs/ft3 to about 70 lbs/ft3, and a particle density of about 215 lbs/ft3 or less;
- and,
- (b) an aqueous solution comprising a magnesium salt selected from the group consisting of magnesium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and mixtures thereof wherein the solution has a specific gravity of about 1.18 to about 1.4, inclusive.
A ceramic material made by a method comprising the steps of
- (a) providing an aqueous magnesium salt solution, wherein the magnesium salt is selected from the group consisting of magnesium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and mixtures thereof, the solution having a specific gravity of about 1.18 to about 1.4, inclusive;
- (b) admixing the aqueous solution of step (a), with a magnesium oxide having a platelet or flake structure, a bulk density of about 30 lbs/ft3 to about 70 lbs/ft3, inclusive, and a particle density of about 215 lbs/ft3 or less, to form a slurry;
- and,
- (c) curing the slurry to form the ceramic material.
A method of making ceramic material, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing an aqueous magnesium salt solution, wherein the magnesium salt is selected from the group consisting of magnesium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and mixtures thereof, the solution having a specific gravity of about 1.18 to about 1.4, inclusive;
- (b) admixing the aqueous solution of step (a), with a magnesium oxide having a platelet or flake structure, a bulk density of about 30 lbs/ft3 to about 70 lbs/ft3, inclusive, and a particle density of about 215 lbs/f3 or less, to form a slurry;
- and,
- (c) curing the slurry to form the ceramic material.
Magnesium oxide having a platelet or flake structure, a bulk density of about 30 lbs/ft3 to about 70 lbs/ft3, inclusive, and a particle density of about 215 lbs/ft3 or less.
