Abstract
Coatings for well screens that protect the screens from damage as they are inserted into the wellbore and once in the well, release reactive materials to react with and degrade potentially plugging materials such as drill solids, fluid filtercakes, fluid loss additives, and drilling fluids. The coatings can be specifically designed for individual well conditions and are comprised of a binder that either melts or dissolves within the wellbore and one or more reactive materials such as acids, enzymes, surfactants, chelants, oxidizers or free radical generators and the like which are released into the screen and the near wellbore area and which are effective in degrading or dissolving materials which could potentially plug the screen.
Claims10
A method for minimizing the damage to the flow capacity of screens or slotted liners comprising:
- a. placing a reactive coating onto a screen or slotted liner prior to placing the screen or slotted liner into the production interval of an oil or gas wells and
- b. allowing the reactive coating to be released into the wellbore where it will degrade, disperse and dissolve filtercakes or fluids that are in the wellbore so that they do not plug the open areas of the screen or slotted liner.
A method for minimizing the damage to the flow capacity of wire wrapped screens that contain internal gravel-prepacks comprising:
- a. coating and filling wire-wrapped screens that contain internal gravel-prepacks with reactive materials, and
- b. allowing the reactive materials to be released into a wellbore where the reactive materials will degrade, disperse and dissolve filtercakes, fluids, or remaining gravel pack viscosifying polymers in the wellbore so that they do not plug the open areas of the wire wrapped screen or damage formation permeability.
A process for coating a wellbore screen with a coating containing reactive materials comprising the following steps:
- a. mixing one or more reactive materials with a binder to form a coating that will harden to coat a surface and that will be released from the surface when the surface is placed downhole in a well,
- b. applying the coating to a surface that will be inserted into a wellbore of a well, and
- c. inserting the coated surface into the wellbore of a well where the coating releases the binder and reactive materials from the surface and the reactive materials interact with constituents present in the wellbore that could potentially plug a production string of the well.
A process for coating a wellbore screen with a coating containing reactive materials comprising the following steps:
- a. mixing one or more reactive materials with a binder to form a coating that will harden to coat a surface and that will be released from the surface when the surface is placed downhole in a well,
- b. applying the coating to a surface that will be inserted into a wellbore of a well, and applying the coating to partially fill the internal diameter of a perforated base pipe, and
- c. inserting the coated surface into the wellbore of a well where the coating releases the binder and reactive materials from the surface and the reactive materials interact with constituents present in the wellbore that could potentially plug a production string of the well.
