System for scheduling an event in a device based on elapsed time or device event

A method for scheduling cleaning of an ink jet print head loaded in an ink jet printer, comprising the steps of:

• receiving real time information from an external source;
• storing the real time information in a volatile memory;
• storing, in a non-volatile memory, a last cleaning time for at least one print head in the ink jet printer;
• calculating an elapsed time by subtracting the stored last cleaning time from the stored real time information;
• comparing the calculated elapsed time to a predetermined elapsed time;
• and
• enabling and incrementing an internal timer in response to a power-on operation of the ink jet printer;
• controlling the at least one print head to perform a cleaning process in the case either the calculated elapsed time is greater than the predetermined elapsed time and storing, in the non-volatile memory, a latest last time for cleaning the at least one print head or controlling the at least one print head to perform a cleaning process only if an incremented time of the internal timer is greater than the predetermined elapsed time, which ever occurs first before a next power-off,
• wherein, when a cleaning process is performed based only on an internal elapsed time, the cleaning process of the at least one print head is controlled without receipt of real time information from the external source.

An apparatus for scheduling an event in a device comprising:

• receiving means for receiving real time information from a computer having a real time clock;
• an internal non-real time clock for counting a time after the event occurred concerning the device;
• and
• control means for scheduling another event in the device based on either the real time information received by the receiving means or when a time counted by the internal non-real time clock reaches a predetermined count,
• wherein, when the control means schedules the another event in the device based on the time counted by the internal non-real time clock reaching the predetermined count, the another event is scheduled without the receipt of real time information from the computer having the real time clock.

A method for scheduling an event in a device comprising the steps of:

• a receiving step of receiving real time information from a computer having a real time clock;
• a counting step of counting a time after the event occurred concerning the device by using an internal non-real time clock;
• and
• a scheduling step of scheduling another event in the device based on the real time information received in the receiving step or when the time counted in the counting step reaches a predetermined count,
• wherein, when in the scheduling step the another event in the device is scheduled based on the time counted by the internal non-real time clock reaching the predetermined count, the another event is scheduled without the receipt of real time information from the computer having the real time clock.

Computer executable program codes stored in a computer readable medium for scheduling an event in a device comprising:

• a first set of computer executable program codes for receiving real time information from a computer having a real time clock;
• a second set of computer executable program codes for counting a time after the event occurred concerning the device by using an internal non-real time clock;
• and
• a third set of computer executable program codes for scheduling another event in the device based on the real time information received in the receiving step or when the time counted in the counting step reaches a predetermined count,
• wherein, when the third set of computer executable program codes schedules the another event in the device based on the time counted by the internal non-real time clock reaching the predetermined count, the another event is scheduled without the receipt of real time information from the computer having the real time clock.

A printing system comprising:

• an external host computer having at least a host processor, a memory, a real time clock, a bi-directional interface and a printer driver, said external host computer performing at least processing, storing and outputting of print data and print commands;
• and
• a printer having a bi-directional port, a non-volatile memory, a volatile memory, a print engine, at least one print head and a processor having an internal timer which increments elapsed time from power-on,
• wherein the external host computer transmits print data, print commands and real time information through the bi-directional interface to the printer and wherein the printer receives the print commands, print data and real time information, stores the received print commands, print data and real time information in the volatile memory,
• wherein the processor in the printer utilizes the real time information only or the elapsed time of the internal timer only, or printer events only to schedule processing events of the printer, and
• wherein, when the processor schedules processing events based on the elapsed time of the internal timer or based on printer events, and wherein the processor schedules the processing events without the receipt of real time information from the external host computer.

A printer comprising:

• an interface for interfacing with a host processor and for receiving print data, print commands, and real time information from the host processor;
• a memory for storing the print data, print commands, and real time information;
• a print engine for printing an image based on the print data and print commands, said print engine controlling at least one print head to print the image;
• and
• a processor for controlling processing events of the print engine, said processor including an internal timer,
• wherein said processor increments an elapsed-time counter upon power-on based on a time of the internal timer and controls the print engine based on either the real time information received via the interface from the host processor or when the elapsed time counter reaches a predetermined count, so as to control the print engine without receipt of said real time information from the host computer.

A method for scheduling cleaning of an ink jet print head loaded in an ink jet printer, comprising the steps of:

• receiving real time information from an external source;
• storing the real time information in a volatile memory;
• storing, in a non-volatile memory, a last cleaning time for at least one print head in the ink jet printer;
• calculating an elapsed time by subtracting the stored last cleaning time from the stored real time information;
• comparing the calculated elapsed time to a predetermined elapsed time;
• enabling and incrementing an internal timer in response to a power-on operation of the ink jet printer;
• controlling the at least one print head to perform a cleaning process either in the case the calculated elapsed time is greater than the predetermined elapsed time and storing, in the non-volatile memory, a latest time for cleaning the at least one print head or controlling the at least one print head to perform a cleaning process in the case an incremented time of the internal timer is greater than the predetermined elapsed time without receipt of said real time information, whichever occurs first before a next power-off so as to perform said cleaning process.
