Abstract
Sulfur compounds present as sulfides and mercaptans in spent caustic streams from refinery and petrochemical processes are oxidized by contacting them with an oxygen-containing gas in a packed column recycle reactor.
Claims10
A method for oxidizing sulfur compounds selected from the group consisting of sulfides, disulfides, thiosulfates and mercaptans in spent caustic streams comprising contacting an oxygen-containing gas and a spent caustic stream in a packed column containing no catalyst, whereby oxygen is dissolved in said spent caustic stream, thereby producing an oxidized spent caustic, withdrawing said oxidized spent caustic into a mixed reactor and reacting said oxidized spent caustic with calcium hydroxide to form sulfate compounds.
