Abstract
A printing paper is provided having the appearance of uncoated paper and improved printability properties approaching those of coated papers. Also provided are a surface treatment formulation having a variable viscosity and a method for producing a printing paper having the appearance of uncoated paper and the improved printability properties approaching those of coated papers.
Claims18
A printing paper comprising:
- a paper web;
- and
- a coating comprising a formulation applied in a layer of substantially uniform thickness to each side of the paper web in an amount of approximately 2 to 5 lbs. per side, per ream of the paper web and dried thereon, wherein the topography of the sheet surface is substantially not altered by the application and drying of the formulation, and wherein the formulation comprises;
- a pigment including hollow synthetic polymer particles in an amount of about 30-60% by weight of the total dry ingredients of the formulation;
- and
- a binder including a high molecular weight modified starch in an amount of about 40-70% by weight of the total dry ingredients of the formulation.

A printing paper made by the process of:
- coating a paper web by applying a layer of a formulation to each side of the paper web in a substantially uniform thickness in an amount of approximately 2 to 5 lbs. per side, per ream of the paper web and drying the applied layer of formulation thereon so that the topography of the sheet surface is substantially not altered by the application and dying of the formulation, and wherein the formulation comprises:
- a pigment including hollow synthetic polymer particles in an amount of about 30-60% by weight of the total dry ingredients of the formulation;
- and
- a binder including a high molecular weight modified starch in an amount of about 40-70% by weight of the total dry ingredients of the formulation.
