Abstract
A shock absorbing wheel suspension apparatus includes an upper rocker arm (6) and a lower roker arm (8) pivotally attached to a bicycle frame (3) with rear shock stays (9) pivotally attached to one end of the upper and lower rocker arms. A shock absorbing element (J) is connected to the opposite ends of the upper and lower rocker arms. This arrangement increases performance by aligning forces for various loading conditions.
Claims16
A bicycle, including
- a suspension system comprising an upper rocker arm and a lower rocker arm, each rocker arm comprising rearward and forward pivot points, and a shockstay having a receptacle to receive a rear wheel axle, the shockstay pivotably connected to the rearward pivot point of each of the upper and lower rocker arms,
- said suspension system aligns and tracks an instant center with an average chain force torque line,
- said average chain force torque line defined as a parallel line extending along the tension side of the bicycle's chain when the chain is positioned at a vertical distance from the center of the forward and rearward chain sprockets, respectively, wherein the vertical distance is the average of the radii of the smallest and largest forward chain sprockets and the average of the radii of the smallest and largest rearward chain sprockets,
- wherein said instant center is defined as a point at the intersection of a first imaginary straight line drawn through the rearward and forward pivot points of the upper rocker arm, and a second imaginary straight line drawn through the rearward and forward pivot points of the lower rocker arm, and wherein the instant center is initially located in front of a front wheel axle, and above a horizontal line extending through the front wheel axle when the suspension system is not compressed, and a perpendicular distance between the instant center and the chain torque line decreases to zero as the suspension is compressed.

A bicycle, including
- a main frame,
- a shock absorbing rear wheel suspension comprising an upper rocker arm and a lower rocker arm, each rocker arm comprising rearward and forward pivot points, and a shockstay having a receptacle to receive a rear wheel axle, the shockstay pivotably connected to the rearward pivot points of each of the upper and lower rocker arms, and
- a chain drive operatively attached to said main frame and to a rear wheel coupled to said shock absorbing rear wheel suspension,
- in which an instant center of said rear wheel suspension tracks a chain torque line, said instant center defined as a point at the intersection of a first imaginary straight line drawn through the rearward and forward pivot points of the upper rocker arm, and a second imaginary straight lute drawn through the rearward and forward pivot points of the lower rocker arm, wherein the instant center is initially located in front of a front wheel axle, and above a horizontal line extending through the font wheel axle when the suspension system is nor compressed, and a perpendicular distance between the instant center and the chain torque line decreases to zero as the suspension is compressed, and
- the chain torque line defined as a parallel line extending along the tension side of the chain while the chain is positioned on chain sprockets of the chain dive.
