Abstract
A fast curing radiation-curable composition useful as coating compositions for inner and outer primary coatings, inks, ribbons other matrix material coating layers for coating and surrounding optical fibers. The improved radiation-curable compositions, having a propoxylated monomer or oligomer component, demonstrate unexpectedly fast cure speeds while providing strong adhesion characteristics to a variety of substrates and can also be used as a general radiation-curable adhesive or can be adapted for use in the specialized process of digital versatile disk (DVD) production.
Claims28
A radiation-curable composition comprising:
- (a) at least about 30 weight %, relative to the total weight of the composition, of an (alkyl)phenol acrylate comprising a branched propoxy group directly bonded to said acrylate;
- (b) from about 30 wt % to about 60 wt %, relative to the total weight of the composition, of a radiation-curable polyether oligomer having a polyether backbone and an acrylate functional group bonded to the backbone via urethane linking group, said backbone consisting essentially of ether moieties;
- (c) a photoinitiator;
- and
- (d) γ-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and/or (meth)acryloxyalkyltrimethoxysilane.
A radiation-curable composition consisting essentially of:
- (a) one or more reactive diluents;
- (b) at least about 30 weight %, relative to the total weight of the composition, of propoxylated nonylphenol acrylate;
- (c) one or more radiation-curable oligomers;
- (d) one or more photoinitiators;
- and
- (e) γ-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and/or (meth)acryloxyalkyltrimethoxysilane;
- wherein each of said one or more radiation-curable oligomers consists essentially of polyether diol residues, diisocyanate residues, and hydroxyethylacrylate residues.
A radiation-curable composition comprising:
- (a) propoxylated nonylphenol acrylate;
- (b) one or more radiation-curable polyether oligomers consisting essentially of polyether diol residues, diisocyanate residues, and hydroxyethylacrylate residues;
- (c) one or more photoinitiators;
- and
- (d) γ-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and/or (meth)acryloxyalkyltrimethoxysilane;
- wherein said radiation-curable composition has a faster cure speed than a comparable composition, said comparable composition being identical to said radiation-curable composition except that said propoxylated nonylphenol acrylate in said radiation-curable composition has been replaced in said comparable composition with an identical weight amount of ethoxylated nonylphenol acrylate.
A radiation-curable composition comprising:
- (a) at least about 30 weight %, relative to the total weight of the composition, of an (alkyl)phenol acrylate comprising a branched propoxy group directly bonded to said acrylate;
- (b) from about 30 wt % to about 60 wt %, relative to the total weight of the composition, of a radiation-curable polyether oligomer having a polyether backbone, said backbone consisting essentially of ether moieties;
- (c) a photoinitiator;
- and
- (d) γ-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and/or (meth)acryloxyalkyltrimethoxysilane;
- wherein said radiation-curable polyether oligomer consists essentially of polyether diol residues, diisocyanate residues, and hydroxyethylacrylate residues.
A radiation-curable composition consisting essentially of:
- (a) propoxylated nonyl phenol acrylate;
- (b) a polyether oligomer prepared from polyether diol, diisocyanate and hydroxyethyl acrylate;
- (c) one or more photoinitiator;
- and
- (d) γ-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and/or (meth)acryloxyalkyltrimethoxysilane.
