Method and apparatus for providing navigational services in a wireless communication device

A method of providing navigational and multimedia entertainment services in a wireless communication device comprising the steps of:

• providing a user interface in a multimedia device in a vehicle for providing said navigational and multimedia entertainment services to a user, wherein said wireless communication device is configured to send and receive said navigational and multimedia entertainment services utilizing a plurality of wireless communication methods, and wherein said user interface is configured to present said user each of said navigational and multimedia entertainment services as a channel, and wherein each said channel is organized in a hierarchy based on a format of said navigational and multimedia entertainment services;
• downloading updated navigational data from a remote network;
• downloading navigational data into the multimedia device from a second wireless communication device;
• and
• providing navigational services based upon said updated navigational data.

A system for providing navigational and multimedia entertainment services to a wireless communication device comprising:

• a network for transferring data to a multimedia device in a vehicle;
• a receiver associated with said multimedia device for receiving updated navigational data;
• a connection for receiving destination data locally from a second wireless communication device;
• and
• a user interface for providing navigational services based upon said updated navigational data and said destination data, wherein said wireless communication device is configured to send and receive said navigational and multimedia entertainment services utilizing a plurality of wireless communication methods, and wherein said user interface is configured to present said user each of said navigational and multimedia entertainment services as a channel, and wherein each said channel is organized in a hierarchy based on a format of said navigational and multimedia entertainment services.

A system for providing navigational and multimedia entertainment services to a wireless communication device comprising:

• a network for transferring data to a multimedia device in a vehicle;
• a receiver associated with said multimedia device for receiving updated navigational data from said network;
• a second wireless communication device for transmitting navigation data to said receiver;
• a connection coupled to said receiver for receiving destination data locally from said second wireless communication device;
• and
• a user interface for providing navigational services based upon said updated navigational data and said destination data, wherein said wireless communication device is configured to send and receive said navigational and multimedia entertainment services utilizing a plurality of wireless communication methods, and wherein said user interface is configured to present said user each of said navigational and multimedia entertainment services as a channel, and wherein each said channel is organized in a hierarchy based on a format of said navigational and multimedia entertainment services.
