Abstract
The present invention provides novel compositions and methods for using the S-(+) enantiomer of desmethylselegiline (N-methyl-N-(prop-2-ynyl)-2-aminophenylpropane), for the treatment of selegiline-responsive diseases and conditions. Diseases and conditions responsive to selegiline include those produced by neuronal degeneration or neuronal trauma and those due to immune system dysfunction. Effective dosages are a daily dose of at least about 0.0015 mg/kg of body weight.
Claims17
In a method for obtaining a selegiline-like therapeutic effect in a patient undergoing drug withdrawal, the improvement which comprises administering to said patient the S-(+) enantiomer of desmethylselegiline employing a dosage regimen effective to to treat one or more withdrawal symptoms.
A pharmaceutical composition, comprising:
- a) S-(+) enantiomer of desmethylselegiline;
- and
- b) a second drug useful in the treatment of the symptoms associated with drug withdrawal;
- wherein said S-(+) enantiomer of desmethylselegiline and said second drug are present in an amount such that one or more unit doses of said composition are effective in the symptomatic treatment of drug withdrawal.
