Abstract
Abrading and cutting devices such as saws include waste containment systems and methods to improve removal of slurry or other contaminants from a work area during operations, and separation of slurry from a carrying medium such as air. A vacuum bar includes high and low vacuum openings to help focus flow and to conserve vacuum pressure. One opening faces the saw blade. A slurry containment and separation container includes walls and configurations for the inlets and outlets that enhance cleaner separation of the air and the slurry. Coolant is applied to the saw blade to make operation and cleanup more efficient. The vacuum generator can operate off of the power generated by the machine.
Claims25
A saw for cutting pavement and other materials, the saw comprising:
- a saw blade extending downwardly and a drive for driving the saw blade;
- and
- a vacuum element spaced from the blade for picking up material produced through operation of the blade, the vacuum element including walls defining two sets of openings opening downwardly, each set of openings having different shapes, wherein the vacuum element includes a vacuum bar extending on at least one side of the blade and a second vacuum element with a second wall defining an opening extending in a direction other than downwardly.
A material pick-up element for picking up a fluid, which may include solid particles, the material pick-up element comprising:
- a first housing including a plurality of housing walls, including a first housing wall, defining a channel within the housing, and wherein the first housing wall includes a plurality of opening walls defining a plurality of apertures passing through the first housing wall to permit a pressure differential across the first housing wall when a vacuum is applied to the material pick-up element, and wherein the plurality of apertures includes at least one low vacuum aperture having a first shape and at least one high vacuum aperture having a second shape different from the first shape;
- and
- a vacuum coupling mounted to the housing having a wall defining an opening for accepting a vacuum conduit, and fluidly connecting the opening to the channel in the first housing.
A material pick-up element for picking up a fluid, which may include solid particles, the material pick-up element comprising:
- a first housing including a plurality of housing walls, including a first housing wall, defining a channel within the housing, and wherein the first housing wall includes a plurality of opening walls defining a plurality of apertures passing through the first housing wall to permit a pressure differential across the first housing wall when a vacuum is applied to the material pick-up element, and wherein the plurality of apertures includes at least one low vacuum aperture and at least one high vacuum aperture;
- a vacuum coupling mounted to the housing having a wall defining an opening for accepting a vacuum conduit, and fluidly connecting the opening to the channel in the first housing;
- and
- wherein the at least one low vacuum aperture is part of a first set of low vacuum apertures and wherein the first set of low vacuum apertures is a plurality of round openings.
A material pick-up element for picking up a fluid, which may include solid particles, the material pick-up element comprising:
- a first housing including a plurality of housing walls, including a first housing wall, defining a channel within the housing, and wherein the first housing wall includes a plurality of opening walls defining a plurality of apertures passing through the first housing wall to permit a pressure differential across the first housing wall when a vacuum is applied to the material pick-up element, and wherein the plurality of apertures includes at least one low vacuum aperture and at least one high vacuum aperture;
- a vacuum coupling mounted to the housing having a wall defining an opening for accepting a vacuum conduit, and fluidly connecting the opening to the channel in the first housing;
- and
- wherein the at least one high vacuum aperture is part of at least one group of high vacuum apertures and the at least one low vacuum aperture is part of a first set of low vacuum apertures and wherein the first housing includes a front portion and a back portion and wherein the at least one group of the second set of high vacuum apertures is positioned closer to the front portion than the first set of low vacuum apertures.
A vacuum pick-up element for a cutting device for picking up a fluid, which may include solid particles, the vacuum pick-up element comprising:
- a first housing element extending in a first direction and defining a first channel for allowing fluid flow and including a first housing wall, and wherein the first housing wall includes a plurality of opening walls defining a first and a second plurality of apertures passing through the first housing wall to permit a pressure differential across the first housing wall when a vacuum is applied to the vacuum pick-up element, and wherein the first plurality of apertures includes at least one low vacuum aperture having a first shape and at least one high vacuum aperture having a second shape different from the first shape;
- a second housing element having a portion spaced apart from the first housing element and defining a second channel and having a second housing wall with a plurality of opening walls defining respective apertures for creating a vacuum wherein at least two of the openings have different shapes;
