Abstract
One embodiment of the present invention is a device for attaching a polygonal baluster end to a handrail or base. This device includes a connector which is generally cylindrical. This connector also defines an internal axial channel having a polygonal cross-section. The axial channel is adapted to receive the polygonal baluster end.
Claims7
A railing kit, comprising:
- (a) a baluster having at least one end with a polygonal cross-section;
- (b) a handrail having a generally circular opening formed therein;
- and
- (c) a connector made of wood which is generally cylindrical and has an external diameter which is tapered to facilitate insertion into said generally circular opening in said handrail, the connector defining an internal axial channel having a polygonal cross-section generally the same as that of said polygonal baluster end, where both said internal axial channel polygonal cross-section and said polygonal baluster end are substantially square, and where said channel receives said polygonal baluster end.

A railing assembly, comprising:
- (a) a solid handrail or base having a circular opening formed therein, the circular opening having a predetermined diameter;
- (b) a generally cylindrical connector having a top end and a bottom end and an external diameter that matches the predetermined diameter of the circular opening in the solid handrail or base, the connector being snugly fitted within said circular opening such that the bottom end of the connector is oriented toward the handrail or base while the top end of the connector is oriented away from the solid handrail or base, the connector defining an internal axial channel extending from the top end of the connector toward the bottom end of the connector, the internal axial channel having a polygonal cross-section and being adapted to receive a polygonal baluster end.
A railing, comprising:
- (a) a solid handrail or base having a circular opening formed therein, said opening having a predetermined diameter formed therein;
- (b) a baluster having an end with a polygonal cross-section;
- and
- (c) a generally cylindrical connector fitted snugly in said opening, the connector having a top end and a bottom end and an external diameter that matches said predetermined diameter of said opening such that the bottom end and the external diameter of the connector contact the solid handrail or base, the connector defining an internal axial channel with a cross-section that matches said polygonal cross-section of the baluster end, the baluster end being fitted within the internal axial channel of the connector.
1 more element
A method for connecting a baluster to a base or handrail, comprising:
- (a) providing a baluster having at least one end with a polygonal cross-section;
- (b) providing a generally cylindrical connector having a top end and a bottom end and a predetermined external diameter therebetween, the connector defining an internal axial channel having a polygonal cross-section generally matching that of said polygonal baluster end;
- (c) providing a suitably solid base or handrail;
- (d) making a generally circular opening of a desired depth in said suitably solid base or handrail, such that said opening has a diameter that is adapted to match said predetermined external diameter of the connector along a substantial portion of said desired depth of said opening;
- (e) inserting said connector into said opening such that no gap that would require covering with an escutcheon is formed between the connector and the solid base or handrail;
- and
- (f) inserting said polygonal baluster end into said internal axial channel.
