7,10,12-trihydroxy-8(E)-octadecenoic acid and derivatives and uses thereof

A formulation comprising:

• 1) a compound having the formula:
• wherein:
• R is —(O)n—R1,
• n is 0,1, and
• R1 is H, or a hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, phenyl, or alkyl phenyl hydrocarbons, wherein the alkyl moiety may be branched or straight chain;
• and
• wherein:
• X1, X2, and X3 are independently selected from hydroxyl, halogen, or NR2R3, wherein R2 and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, phenyl, or alkyl phenyl hydrocarbons, wherein the alkyl moiety may be branched or straight chain;
• and
• 2) a carrier for said compound;
• wherein said compound is present in an effective amount for controlling a biological organism.

The compound having the formula:

• wherein:
• R is —(O)n—R1,
• n is 0,1, and
• R1 is H, or a hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, phenyl, or alkyl phenyl hydrocarbons, wherein the alkyl moiety may be branched or straight chain;
• and
• wherein:
• X1, X2, and X3 are independently selected from hydroxyl, halogen, or NR2R3, wherein R2 and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, phenyl, or alkyl phenyl hydrocarbons, wherein the alkyl moiety may be branched or straight chain.
