## Abstract

The invention provides ampS polypeptides and DNA (RNA) encoding ampS polypeptides and methods for producing such polypeptides by recombinant techniques. Also provided are methods for utilizing ampS polypeptides to screen for antibacterial compounds.

An isolated polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence comprising SEQ ID NO:2; wherein the amino acid sequence exhibits aminopeptidase activity.

An isolated fusion polypeptide comprising a heterologous amino acid sequence fused to SEQ ID NO:2.
