Abstract
A method for laser welding a metal workpiece comprises providing a process gas consisting essentially of helium and at least 0.5% by volume nitrogen and flushing a weld point with the process gas. The process gas contains no argon or neon and the metal workpiece includes aluminum or an aluminum alloy.

A method for laser welding a metal workpiece, comprising:
- providing a process gas consisting essentially of helium and at least 0.5% by volume nitrogen and
- flushing a weld point with the process gas,
- wherein the process gas contains no argon or neon and the metal workpiece comprises aluminum or an aluminum alloy.
