Abstract
An additive composition comprising: (a) an ashless dispersant comprising an acylated nitrogen compound; and (b) a carboxylic acid, or an ester of the carboxylic acid and an alcohol wherein the acid has from 2 to 50 carbon atoms and the alcohol has one or more carbon atoms provides an improvement in the lubricity of fuel oils and exhibits improved solubility in the fuel oil.
Claims9
A method of improving the lubricity performance of a fuel oil containing not more than 0.03% by weight of sulphur and having a 95% distillation point of not greater than 350° C., the method comprising adding to the fuel oil a lubricity improving amount of an additive comprising (a) an ashless dispersant comprising an acylated nitrogen compound and (b) an ester of a dimer carboxylic acid wherein the hydrocarbyl group has 10 to 40 carbon atoms and a glycol or polyglycol, the ester being terminated with monoalcohol, and wherein the ratio of component (a):component (b), calculated on a weight:weight basis, is in the range of greater than 100:1 to 2:1.
