The invention provides DNA primase assays suitable for identifying DN primase modulating agents, methods of modulating DNA primase activity, compounds for modulating DNA primase activity, and compositions which modulate DNA primase.

A compound having the structure:
- and its pharmaceutically acceptable salts, wherein:
- R1 is pyridyl;
- R2 is aryl;
- and
- X is selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur, and NR3, where R3 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkylcarbonyl, and arylcarbonyl.
