A topical ophthalmic composition for the treatment of dry eye in humans, comprising one or more histamine H2 agonists, is disclosed.

A method for the treatment of dry eye comprising topically administering to a human patient's eye a composition comprising a pharmaceutically effective amount of one or more histamine H2 agonist(s) in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, provided that the one or more histamine H2 agonist(s) does not comprise impromidine.
