Abstract
A network includes a hub device connected to a plurality of peripheral devices. The hub device includes a send token register, a receive token register, and a communication protocol engine. The send token register contains tokens for allocation of output data bandwidth. The receive token register contains tokens for allocation of input data bandwidth. The communication protocol engine alternately transmits the tokens from the send and receive token registers to ensure a split of the output and input data bandwidth on the network.
Claims20
A network having a hub device connected to a plurality of peripheral devices, the hub device comprising:
- a send token register containing tokens for allocation of output data bandwidth;
- a receive token register containing tokens for allocation of input data bandwidth;
- and
- a communication protocol engine that alternately transmits the tokens from the send and receive token registers to ensure a split of the output and input data bandwidth on the network.
A network, comprising:
- a plurality of peripheral devices;
- and
- a hub device, communicably connected to the peripheral devices via a plurality of communication streams, comprising:
- a send token register containing tokens for allocation of output data bandwidth;
- a receive token register containing tokens for allocation of input data bandwidth;
- and
- a communication protocol engine that alternates between the send and receive token registers to ensure a split of the output and input data bandwidth on the network.
A network having a hub device connected to a plurality of peripheral devices, the hub device comprising:
- a send token FIFO containing tokens for allocation of output data bandwidth;
- a receive token FIFO containing tokens for allocation of input data bandwidth;
- a status request token ring containing tokens for allocation of status response messages;
- and
- digital control logic configured to
- alternate between the send and receive token FIFOs to ensure a division of send and receive data bandwidth when both the send and receive token FIFOs are non-empty,
- write tokens into the status request token ring to schedule transmission of the status response messages,
- add tokens to the send token FIFO to schedule data transmissions,
- add tokens to the send token FIFO when no acknowledgments are received from the peripheral devices after data transmissions from the hub device,
- receive, from the peripheral devices, data messages and status response messages indicating that data messages are available for transmission,
- add tokens to the receive token FIFO in response to the received status response messages,
- perform integrity checks on the received data messages,
- add tokens to the receive token FIFO in response to failed ones of the integrity checks,
- analyze the received data messages to determine whether a bit is set indicating that the peripheral devices have additional data messages to transmit, and
- add tokens to the receive token FIFO in response to set bits in the received data messages.
In a network having a hub device connected to a plurality of peripheral devices, the hub device including a send token FIFO containing tokens for allocation of output data bandwidth, a receive token FIFO containing tokens for allocation of input data bandwidth, a status request token ring containing tokens for allocation of status response messages, a memory having program instructions, and digital control logic configured to use the program instructions, a method, executed by the digital control logic, for managing transmissions on the network, comprising the steps of:
- alternating between the send and receive token FIFOs to ensure a division of send and receive data bandwidth when both the send and receive token FIFOs are non-empty;
- writing tokens into the status request token ring to schedule transmission of the status response messages;
- adding tokens to the send token FIFO to schedule data transmissions;
- adding tokens to the send token FIFO when no acknowledgments are received from the peripheral devices after data transmissions from the hub device;
- receiving, from the peripheral devices, data messages and status response messages indicating that data messages are available for transmission;
- adding tokens to the receive token FIFO in response to the received status response messages;
- performing integrity checks on the received data messages;
- adding tokens to the receive token FIFO in response to failed ones of the integrity checks;
- analyzing the received data messages to determine whether a bit is set indicating that the peripheral devices have additional data messages to transmit;
- and
- adding tokens to the receive token FIFO in response to set bits in the received data messages.
