Abstract
Pharmaceutical compositions and processes for their preparation containing R-α-lipoic acid or S-α-lipoic acid or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. The pharmaceutical compositions have a cytoprotective activity and are suitable for combatting pain and inflammation.

A method for producing a cytoprotective effect in a person which comprises administering an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a pharmaceutically effective carrier and, as active ingredient, an effective amount of R-α-lipoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof essentially free of S-α-lipoic acid.
