Abstract
An electoclinic device having two spaced cell walls each bearing electrode structures and treated on at least one facing surface with an alignment layer, a layer of a smectic liquid crystal material enclosed between the cell walls, where the liquid crystal material contains one or more of the compounds described by formula I as defined in the specification.
Claims2
A compound of the formula:
- wherein
- X is CF3, CF2H, CFH2, hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy;
- X2 is CF3, CF2H, CFH2, hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy;
- X3 is CF3, CF2H, CFH2, hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy;
- X4 is CF3, CF2H, CFH2, hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy;
- A and B are independently phenyl, mono-fluorinated phenyl, di-fluorinated phenyl or cyclohexyl;
- Y groups are independently selected from a single bond, COO, OOC, C≡C;
- provided that at least one of the Y groups is a single bond;
- q is 0 or 1;
- R1 is an end group of the following Formula II:
- wherein
- Z is (CH2)nO where n is 0, 1 or 2;
- J and M are independently selected from H, C1-4 alkyl;
- W is C1-C12 straight or branched alkyl chain;
- provided J, M, W are different;
- provided that R2 contains 1-14 carbon atoms wherein one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by CO2 or O;
- and further provided that at least one of X or X2 is CF3, CF2H or CFH2, with the proviso that the compound must contain at least one carboxylate, and if Y is OOC, then A or B attached to the carboxy carbon Y must be phenyl.
