Ring gate for retractable pin injection molding

An injection mold for producing golf balls, comprising:

• A first mold plate defining a first cavity having a substantially hemispherical inner surface terminating in a first parting line surface;
• A second mold plate defining a second cavity having a substantially hemispherical inner surface terminating in a second parting line surface, wherein the cavities of said mold plates form a substantially spherically shaped mold cavity and said parting lines form a ring gate that is a substantially continuous annular opening around a substantial portion of the mold cavity;
• A primary runner for supplying layer material to the mold;
• A ring-shaped secondary runner disposed around the mold cavity in communication with the primary runner and the ring gate, wherein the primary runner and secondary runner are configured and adapted within the mold such that flow of layer material from the primary runner is introduced into the secondary runner in a direction essentially perpendicular to the first and second parting line surfaces.
