Abstract
This invention is directed to methods of manufacturing implantable biocompatible cell encapsulation devices, wherein the cell encapsulation devices have a jacket made of a permeable, biocompatible material that is loaded with a core made of a reticulate foam scaffold having interconnected pores, with cells that are dispersed in the interconnected pores.
Claims8
A method of manufacturing an implantable, biocompatible cell encapsulation device comprising:
- (a) forming a jacket comprising a permeable biocompatible material;
- (b) loading the jacket with a core comprising a reticulate foam scaffold having interconnected pores, the pore density of the foam varying between 20%-90%, the core further comprising a population of living mammalian cells dispersed in the pores:
- (c) sealing the jacket;
- wherein the jacket provides at least one permeable membrane surface which permits passage of biologically active substances across said membrane while preventing passage of mammalian cells thereacross.
