Abstract
A reaction for eliminating a functional group alpha to a carbonyl group. The reaction can be used to dehydrate a compound having an alcohol group alpha to a carbonyl group by reacting the compound in a non-aqueous non-polar solvent in the presence of an effective amount of a transition metal salt, such as zinc chloride, such that the alcohol group is dehydrated. This Nohr-MacDonald Elimination Reaction produces a light stable compound, which can be added to compositions for light stabilization of a colorant. The modified compound may be combined with a wave-length selective sensitizer.
Claims9
A method of dehydrating a compound having a hydroxy group alpha to a carbonyl group, the method comprising reacting the compound in a non-aqueous non-polar solvent in the presence of an approximately equimolar amount of a transition metal salt such that the hydroxy group is dehydrated, wherein the compound is represented by the formula:
- wherein:
- R1 is a hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or an aryl group;
- R2 is a hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or an aryl group;
- and
- R3 is a substituted aryl which substitution contains a heterocyclic group.
