Abstract
The present invention is directed, inter alia, to methods of utilizing low calcemic vitamin D analogues. Particularly, the present invention is directed to using low calcemic vitamin D analogues to treat neurodegenerative diseases and disorders, to facilitate endogenous production of neurotrophic factors, to inhibit the degradation, dysfunction or loss of neural cells and/or to enhance the phenotype of neural cells or neuronal processes.
Claims52
A method of treating neurodegenerative diseases or disorders comprising administering to a patient a compound of Formula (I):
- wherein Z is selected from the group consisting of
- and
- and wherein
- X is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy group;
- R1 and R2 each independently represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-C6 alkyl group, or R1 and R2, taken together with the carbon atom bearing the X group, to form a C3-C8 cyclic ring;
- R3 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C10 alkyl group;
- and
- Q is a single bond or a C1-C8 alkylene group.
A method of facilitating production of a neurotrophic factor selected from the group consisting of GNDF, NT-3, NRT, CTNF, NGF, BDNF, and combinations thereof, comprising administering to a patient a compound of Formula (I):
- wherein Z is selected from the group consisting of
- and
