Abstract
An environmentally prefered biobased soybean oil based electrically insulating fluid with a high flash point and a high fire point. The base oil is hydrogenated to produce maximum possible stability of the soybean oil, and can be winterized to remove crystallized fats and improve the pour point of the base oil without the necessity of heating the oil. The base oil can also be combined with an additive package containing materials specifically designed for improved pour point, improved cooling properties, and improved dielectric stability. The base oil is capable of conforming to the President's executive order 13101 of Sep. 14, 1998 for “Greening the Government Through Waste Prevention, Recycling, and Federal Acquisition.”
Claims49
An environmentally preferred biobased insulating fluid for electrical components comprising:
- a base oil selected from the group consisting of at least partially hydrogenated soybean oil, soybean oil made from soybeans which are relatively high in oleic acid content compared to commodity soybeans, and combinations thereof;
- and an effective amount of an antioxidant.
A method of obtaining an environmentally preferred biobased insulating fluid in an electrical component comprising:
- selecting a base oil from the group consisting of at least partially hydrogenated soybean oil, soybean oil made from soybeans which are relatively high in oleic acid content compared to commodity soybeans, and combinations thereof;
- and
- adding an effective amount of an antioxidant;
- and placing the fluid into the electrical component.
A process for producing an environmentally preferred biobased soybean-based electrically insulating fluid comprising:
- creating a base oil from soybean oil by which has been stabilized by
- at least partially hydrogenating the soybean oil or using soybean oil made from soybeans which are relatively high in oleic acid compared to commodity soybeans;
- winterizing the stabilized soybean oil to remove crystallized fats and reduce pour point;
- and
- combining the soybean oil with a thinning ester and an antioxidant to produce an electrically insulating fluid having a kinematic viscosity in the range of 20-40 cSt at 40° C.
An environmentally preferred electrical component comprising:
- a body, the body including a cavity for a biobased electrically insulating fluid;
- and
- a biobased electrically insulating fluid in the cavity comprising
- a base oil selected from the group consisting of at least partially hydrogenated soybean oil, fully hydrogenated soybean oil, soybean oil made from soybeans which have an oleic acid content of 30% or greater, and combinations thereof;
- and an antioxidant.
