Abstract
Preventive as well as therapeutic treatment to alleviate cosmetic conditions and symptoms of dermatologic disorders with amphoteric compositions containing alpha hydroxyacids, alpha ketoacids, related compounds or polymeric forms of hydroxyacids is disclosed. The cosmetic conditions and the dermatologic disorders in which the amphoteric compositions and the polymeric compounds may be useful include dry skin, dandruff, acne, keratoses, psoriasis, eczema, pruritus, age spots, lentigines, melasmas, wrinkles, warts, blemished skin, hyperpigmented skin, kyperkeratotic skin, inflammatory dermatoses, skin changes associated with aging, and skin requiring cleansers.
Claims41
A composition comprising:
- (A) at least one hydroxymonocarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of 2,3,4,-trihydroxybutanoic acid, 2,3,4,5,-tetrahydroxypentanoic acid, 2,3,4,5,6-pentahydroxyhexanoic acid, and 2,3,4,5,6,7-hexahydroxyheptanoic acid or ketomonocarboxylic acid, wherein said hydroxymonocarboxylic acid or ketomonocarboxylic acid is present in an enhancing effective amount, and
- (B) at least one agent other than a corticosteroid, said agent being selected from an antihistamine, an analgesic, an anesthetic and an antipruritic agent,
- wherein the hydroxymonocarboxylic acid or ketomonocarboxylic acid is present as a free acid, lactone, pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or an isomer thereof.
A method of enhancing the therapeutic effect of a composition comprising at least one agent other than a corticosteroid, said agent being selected from an antihistamine, an analgesic, an anesthetic and an antipruritic agent, said method comprising:
- admixing with said composition an enhancing effective amount of a compound comprising at least one hydroxymonocarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of 2,3,4,-trihydroxybutanoic acid, 2,3,4,5,-tetrahydroxypentanoic acid, 2,3,4,5,6-pentahydroxyhexanoic acid, and 2,3,4,5,6,7-hexahydroxyheptanoic acid or ketomonocarboxylic acid,
- wherein the hydroxymonocarboxylic acid or ketomonocarboxylic acid is present as a free acid, ester, lactone, pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or an isomer thereof.
A method of alleviating symptoms associated with skin conditions and disorders selected from the group consisting of pain, eczema, inflammation and itching, comprising topically applying a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising at least one agent other than a corticosteroid, said agent being selected from the group consisting of an antihistamine, and analgesic, an anesthetic and an antipruritic agent in a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle, comprising:
