Abstract
Phosphonium salts are prepared by reacting an alkanol with triarylphosphine and alkyl or trifluoromethane sulfonic acids in a solvent.

A process for preparing a phosphonium salt of the formula I:
- where
- R is aryl, and
- X⊖ is CnH2n+1—SO3⊖, with n =1-4, or
- CF3—SO3⊖,
- which comprises reacting an alcohol of the formula II:
- with a triarylphosphine in the presence of a sulfonic acid of the formula
- Cn H2n+1—SO3H or CF3—SO3H,
- where n is as defined above, in a solvent.

A process for preparing lycopene, comprising:
- (a) reacting an alcohol represented by formula II:
- with a triarylphosphine and a sulfonic acid represented by the formula CnH2n+1—SO3H or CF3—SO3H, wherein n=1-4,
- to produce a phosphonium salt represented by formula I:
- wherein R=aryl and X=CnH2n+1—SO363 or CF3—SO3⊖ with n=1-4;
- and
- (b) reacting the phosphonium salt represented by formula I with 2,7-dimethyl-2,4,6-octatriendial, to produce lycopene.

- CF3—SO363 ,
- which consists essentially of reacting an alcohol of the formula II:
- with a triarylphosphine and a sulfonic acid of the formula
- CnH2n+1—SO3H or CF3—SO3H,
- where n is as defined above, in a solvent.
