Abstract
The analgesic effectiveness of tramadol is significantly enhanced by administering tramadol prior to, with or following the administration of an analgesia enhancer which is a nontoxic NMDA receptor blocker and/or a nontoxic substance that blocks at least one major intracellular consequence of NMDA receptor activation.
Claims19
A therapeutic composition containing (a) neuropathic pain-alleviating amount of at least one anticonvulsant, (b) an anticonvulsant-potentiating amount of at least one nontoxic antagonist for the NMDA receptor or nontoxic substance that blocks a major intracellular consequence of NMDA receptor activation, and a therapeutically effective amount of at (c) least one analgesic.
A therapeutic composition comprising (a) a neuropathic pain-alleviating amount of gabapentin anticonvulsant and (b) an anticonvulsant-potentiating amount of at least one nontoxic antagonist for the NMDA receptor or nontoxic substance that blocks a major intracellular consequence of NMDA receptor activation.
A method of alleviating neuropathic pain which comprises administering to a mammal exhibiting neouropatic pain (a) a neuropathic pain-alleviating amount of at least one anticonvulsant, (b) an anticonvulsant-potentiating amount of at least one nontoxic antagonist for the NMDA receptor or nontoxic substance that blocks a major intracellular consequence of NMDA receptor activation, and (c) a therapeutically effective amount of at least one analgesic (c), with (a) being administered prior to, with or following the administration of (b).
A method of alleviating neuropathic pain which comprises administering to a mammal exhibiting neuropathic pain (a) a neuropathic pain-alleviating amount of gabapentin anticonvulsant and (b) an anticonvulsant-potentiating amount of at least one nontoxic antagonist for the NMDA receptor or nontoxic substance that blocks a major intracellular consequence of NMDA receptor activation with (a) being administered prior to, with or following the administration of (b).
