A peptide of the formula I X--Glu--Trp--Y (I) wherein X is H or Gly, Ala, Leu, Ile, Val, NVal, Pro, Tyr, Phe, Trp, D-Ala, D-Leu, D-Ile, D-Val, D-NVal, D-Pro, D-Tyr, D-Phe, D-Trp, .gamma.-aminobutyric acid, .xi.-aminocaproic acid, and Y is Gly, Ala, Leu, Ile, Val, NVal, Pro, Tyr, Phe, Trp, D-Ala, D-Leu, D-Ile, D-Val, D-NVal, D-Pro, D-Tyr, D-Phe, D-Trp, .gamma.-aminobutyric acid, .xi.-aminocaproic acid, --OH, mono- or di-substituted amide (c.sub.1 -c.sub.3) and the uses therefore in modulating the immune system and hemopiesis.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of modulating hemopoiesis in an animal comprising administering to the animal an effective amount of one or more of the peptides of formula I:
X--Glu--Trp--Y (I)
wherein X is H, Gly, Ala, Leu, Ile, Val, NVal, Pro, Tyr, Phe, Trp, D-Ala, D-Leu, D-Ile, D-Val, D-NVal, D-Pro, D-Tyr, D-Phe, D-Trp, His, Lys, Arg .gamma.-aminobutyric acid, or .xi.-aminocaproic acid; Y is Gly, Ala, Leu, Ile, Val, NVal, Pro, Tyr, Phe, Trp, D-Ala, D-Leu, D-Ile, D-Val, D-NVal, D-Pro, D-Tyr, D-Phe, D-Trp, Arg, .gamma.-aminobutyric acid, .xi.-aminocaproic acid, --OH, NH.sub.2, N.sub.2 H.sub.3, or a mono- or di-substituted amide (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3); with the proviso that when X is H, Y is not --OH and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of modulating hemopoiesis in an animal according to claim 1 wherein the one or more peptides are selected from the group consisting of: H-Ile-Glu-Trp-OH, His-Glu-Trp-OH, H-Glu-Trp-NH.sub.2, H-Glu-Trp-Arg, Lys-Glu-Trp-OH, Arg-Glu-Trp-OH, H-Glu-Trp-Tyr, Lys-Glu-Trp-Tyr, H-Glu-Trp-N.sub.2 H.sub.3, H-Glu-Trp-Gly, and Val-Glu-Trp-OH.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of modulating hemopoiesis in an animal according to claim 2 wherein the one or more peptides comprises H-Ile-Glu-Trp-OH.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of modulating hemopoieses in an animal according to claim 3 wherein the one or more peptides consists of H-Ile-Glu-Trp-OH.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1 wherein an effective amount of the peptide is 0.001-0.1 mg/kg weight of the animal.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1 wherein the modulation of hemopoiesis comprises stimulating hemopoieses in an animal.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the one or more peptides comprises H-Ile-Glu-Trp-OH.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1 wherein the modulation of hemopoiesis comprises the restoring of hemopoiesis in an animal with impaired hemopoiesis.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The method according to claim 7 wherein the one or more peptides comprises H-Ile-Glu-Trp-OH.
