Bi- and tri-cyclic aza compounds and their uses

A compound, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, having the structure:

• ##STR59## wherein:
• W.sub.1 and W.sub.2 taken together form .dbd.O, .dbd.S, .dbd.NOR.sub.3, .dbd.N--CN, .dbd.N--NR.sub.3 R.sub.4, .dbd.CR.sub.3 R.sub.4 or (C.sub.3 -C.sub.8) alkeno, or
• W.sub.1 and W.sub.2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of --H, halogen, --OR.sub.3, --SR.sub.3, --N--NR.sub.3 R.sub.4 or --(CH.sub.2).sub.o --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.o -R.sub.7 where each o is independently 0, 1, 2 or 3;
• R.sub.1 is phenyl or phenyl independently substituted with one or more R.sub.6 ;
• R.sub.2 is --H, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6) alkyl, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6) alkenyl, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6) alkynyl, (C.sub.5 -C.sub.20) aryl, 5-20 membered heteroaryl or --(CH.sub.2).sub.q --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.q --R.sub.7 where each q is independently 0, 1, 2 or 3;
• R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of --H, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6) alkenyl, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6) alkynyl, (C.sub.5 -C.sub.20) aryl, (C.sub.5 -C.sub.20) aryl independently substituted with one or more R.sub.6, 6-26 membered heteroaryl and 6-26 membered heteroaryl independently substituted with one or more R.sub.6 ;
• each R.sub.6 is independently selected from the group consisting of halogen, --CF.sub.3, --CN, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkyl, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6) alkenyl, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.6) alkynyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6) alkoxy and (C.sub.3 -C.sub.6) cycloalkoxy;
• and
• R.sub.7 is (C.sub.5 -C.sub.20) aryl, (C.sub.5 -C.sub.20) aryl independently substituted with one or more R.sub.6, 5-20 membered heteroaryl and 5-20 membered heteroaryl independently substituted with one or more R.sub.6.
