Abstract
.alpha..sub.1 -antitrypsin and peptide fragments and derivatives thereof are used to upregulate low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol receptor levels in the liver, and this results in a decrease in circulating LDL cholesterol levels in the patient's circulatory system. In particular, the fragments are: Leu-Phe-Met-Gly-Lys-Val-Val-Asn (SEQ ID NO:16) - Phe-Met-Gly-Lys-Val-Val-Asn (SEQ ID NO:17).
Claims13
A method for lowering low density lipoprotein cholesterol in a patient in need thereof, comprising the step of administering to said patient a sufficient quantity of a compound selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO. 16 and SEQ ID NO. 17, or derivative of said compound at amino terminus, to increase the level of low density lipoprotein cholesterol receptors.
