A compound of having the formula ##STR17## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R.sup.3 is

• --CH.sub.2 SPh,
• --SCH.sub.3, or
• --S(O)CH.sub.3 ;
• W is
• C.sub.1-7 alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted with one or more of hydroxy,
• COOH,
• amino,
• phenyl,
• naphthyl,
• C.sub.3-7 cycloalkyl,
• CF.sub.3,
• N(CH.sub.3).sub.2,
• --C.sub.1-3 alkylphenyl,
• --C.sub.1-3 alkylnaphthyl , or
• heteroaryl;
• A is ##STR18## wherein Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 are independently hydrogaen,
• C.sub.1-4 alkyl
• C.sub.1-4 alkoxy,
• C.sub.3-7 cycloalkyl,
• halogen, or
• trifluoromethyl;
• R.sup.4 is
• a) hydrogen,
• b) C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
• c) C.sub.1-4 alkoxy,
• d) halogen,
• e) --OCH.sub.2 CF.sub.3,
• f) --OCH.sub.2)CN,
• g) --COOH,
• h) --OH,
• i) --COOR.sup.6, where R.sup.6 is C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
• j) --CONR.sup.7 R.sup.8, where R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 are independently
• hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
• k) --(CH.sub.2).sub.1-4 OH,
• l) --CH.sub.2 NHC(O)CH.sub.3,
• m) --CH.sub.2 NHC(O)CF.sub.3,
• n) --CH.sub.2 NHSO.sub.2 CH.sub.3,
• o) --SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2,
• p) --(CH.sub.2).sub.1-4 SO.sub.2 NR.sup.7 R.sup.8,

• wherein
• R.sup.9 is H or C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
• R.sup.10 and R.sup.11 are independently
• i) hydrogen,
• ii) C.sub.3-7 cycloalkyl,
• iii) aryl,
• iv) heteroaryl,
• v) --(CH.sub.2).sub.1-2 NCH.sub.2 CH.sub.3,
• vi) C.sub.1-4 alkyl unsubstituted or substituted with one or more of:
• hydroxy,
• COOH,
• amino,
• aryl, or
• heteroaryl, or
• R.sup.10 and R.sup.11 are joined to form a four to seven membered cycloalkyl ring unsubstituted or substituted with hydroxy, amino or aryl,
• wherein Z is O, S or CH.sub.2, and
• R.sup.5 is
• hydrogen,
• halogen,
• C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
• C.sub.1-4 alkoxy,
• CF.sub.3,
• CN, or
• CO.sub.2 NH.sub.2.
