A process for producing L-homophenylalanine, comprising the step of reacting 2-oxo-4-phenylbutyric acid with L-glutamic acid in the presence of tyrosine aminotransferase in a reaction solution to produce L-homophenylalanine and L-ketoglutamic acid such that L-homophenylalanine precipitates from said reaction solution and wherein said precipitation drives said reaction substantially to completion.
