Abstract
Compositions useful in the treatment of dietary disorders, and as dietary additives to provide a source of fiber and of short chain fatty acids, to reduce the level of serum cholesterol, increase HDL cholesterol levels and as bulking agents in humans and animals, as well as methods of use therefor are described. The compositions and methods are based on whole .beta.-glucans.
Claims20
A dietary supplement for administration to mammals comprising an amount of whole .beta.-glucan sufficient to increase high density lipoprotein cholesterol level in said mammal.
A method of providing a source of fiber in a diet of a mammal comprising administering to the subject an amount of whole yeast .beta.-glucan sufficient to increase high density lipoprotein cholesterol level in the mammal.
A method of increasing HDL cholesterol in a human or animal comprising administering to the human or animal an amount of whole yeast .beta.-glucan sufficient to cause an increase in HDL cholesterol in the human or animal.
