Abstract
Fluorinated biphenylcyclohexanes of the formula I ##STR1## in which R, X, Z, L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3 and n are as defined herein, are suitable as components of liquid-crystalline media.

A liquid-crystalline medium comprising one or more compounds of the formula I ##STR79## in which R is H or an alkyl, oxaalkyl or oxaalkenyl radical having 1-6 carbon atoms, alkyl optionally having a --CH.sub.2 -- group replaced by --CH=CH--,
- X is F, Cl, CN or an alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy or alkenyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms which is substituted by one or more fluorine atoms,
- L.sup.1 is F,
- L.sup.2 is H or F,
- L.sup.3 is H,
- Z is --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --CH=CH--, or --C.ident.C-- [or a single bond], and
- n is 0, 1, 2 or 3.
