Abstract
An arrangement for separating a hydrophobic liquid phase from a gaseous stream includes a coalescer filter, a housing, a gas flow direction arrangement, and a liquid collection arrangement. The coalescer filter includes a non-woven media of fibers. The housing includes an interior having a gas flow inlet and a gas flow outlet. The liquid collection arrangement is positioned within the housing construction and is oriented for receiving liquid collected from the coalescer filter and drained therefrom. Methods for conducting the separations are also provided.
Claims20
A filter arrangement comprising:
- (a) a housing having an interior;
- a gas flow inlet;
- a gas flow outlet;
- and a liquid flow outlet;
- (i) said gas flow inlet for receiving gases having an entrained liquid therein;
- (b) a coalescer filter oriented in said housing interior downstream of said gas flow inlet oriented for passage of gases received by said gas flow inlet;
- (i) said coalescer filter comprising non-pleated polyester fiberous filter media;
- (A) said non-pleated polyester fiberous filter media being non-cylindrical and having a first side and an opposite second side;
- (ii) said coalescer filter separating a liquid phase from the gases having the entrained liquid by straight through flow from said first side to said second side;
- (iii) said coalescer filter being removable from and replaceable in said housing interior:
- (c) a pleated barrier filter oriented in said housing interior downstream of said coalescer filter;
- (i) said pleated barrier filter oriented to remove at least some particulates from gases received from said coalescer filter;
- (ii) said pleated barrier filter being removable from and replaceable in said housing interior;
- (d) a liquid collection arrangement oriented for receiving liquid collected within said coalescer filter and drained therefrom;
- and
- (e) a baffle member extending between said coalescer filter and said pleated barrier filter;
- (i) said baffle member extending between said second side of said non-pleated polyester fiberous filter media and said pleated barrier filter to block a direct straight line gas flow from said coalescer filter to said pleated barrier filter.
A hydrophobic fluid coalescer filter comprising:
- (a) a region of media having a first side and an opposite second side;
- (i) said region of media comprising a region of nonwoven fibrous media;
- (ii) said first side of said region of media having a first exposed surface area;
- and
- (b) a housing having first and second, opposite, sides and an outer periphery;
- (i) said housing first side having a first surface with a gas flow opening therein;
- (ii) said region of media being positioned within said housing with said first side of said media exposed by said gas flow opening in said housing first side;
- (iii) said housing second side having a second surface with a gas flow opening therein;
- (iv) said region of media being positioned within said housing with said media second side exposed by said gas flow opening in said housing second side;
- and,
- (v) said housing including a seal member positioned along said outer periphery.
A method of treating diesel engine blow-by gases;
- the method comprising steps of:
- (a) directing blow-by gases from a diesel engine to a housing construction having a coalescer filter and a pleated media filter operably assembled in the housing construction;
- (i) the coalescer filter and pleated media filter being removable from and replaceable in the housing construction;
- (ii) the coalescer filter being non-cylindrical and having an upstream side and an opposite downstream side;
- (b) removing at least a portion of an aerosol phase from the gases with the coalescer filter as a collected liquid by directing the gases from the upstream side through the coalescer filter to the downstream side;
- (c) after said step of removing at least a portion of an aerosol phase, directing the gases around a baffle to the pleated media filter;
- (d) filtering at least a portion of particulates from the gases with the pleated media filter;
- and
- (e) after said step of removing at least a portion of the collected aerosol phase, directing the collected liquid to a drain construction to recover at least 50% of oil by weight entrained in the blow-by gases.
